Moixa is delighted to work with Energia in bringing GridShare optimised batteries and solar systems to Irish homes. By enabling homeowners to generate their own renewable electricity from sunlight and store it in batteries for later use, we are helping them to save money, save carbon, and be ready for the smart energy system of the future.
As a first phase of the partnership over the last year, Energia has deployed a number of 4.8kWh Moixa Smart Batteries to its customers. These homes also delivered frequency-related grid services from a virtual power plant of aggregated devices as part of a flagship project with Eirgrid, Ireland’s transmission network operator.
Energia are now expanding the solar and storage proposition to their wider customer base empowering consumers to evolve into prosumers, by not just simply consuming energy but taking control of producing their own renewable energy and using it when it is most beneficial.
This transforms consumers into key stakeholders in a collaborative transition to a zero-carbon energy system in Ireland. With this vision in mind, Energia has set out to create innovative offers that enable its customers to decarbonise their homes. The increased awareness of efficient energy use will help to tackle the challenges that growing levels of variable renewable energy generation pose onto the Irish electricity grid and we at Moixa are pleased that our products are enabling this transition to zero carbon energy.
The GridShare software underpinning the smart energy system is a first for Ireland, it identifies a home’s renewable energy generation potential and consumption patterns, takes into account available flexible tariffs – such as Energia’s day/night tariff. Customers can also view their energy usage via the Moixa Dashboard and App. Over this coming year Energia will be developing additional innovative tariffs to allow for further saving through predictions and optimisation by GridShare.
We have caught up with Joe Herbert, Energy Services Development Engineer at Energia, to discuss some challenges and opportunities of the energy transition to energy suppliers, including how our partnership allows Energia to grow their green offering for the customers:
As an energy provider, why is it important to you to promote smart technologies?
We want to offer our customers a unique opportunity to adopt this innovative renewable energy technology to help reduce their electricity bills, monitor their electricity usage in real-time, lower their carbon footprint and lead the way for positive change in our environment while becoming proficient in generating their own green, renewable energy.

What do you think is the potential of flexibility services for the grid?
Flexibility services have huge potential both in Ireland and globally to change how people view electricity, it will help engage and empower end consumers and enable them take part in the wider electricity systems while allowing utilities to maximise the value of their renewable generations assets, value they can then pass onto electricity consumers all while having the benefit of being green.
What are the main challenges of the energy transition for energy suppliers like Energia?
An increasingly digital electricity system raises many challenges but also creates many opportunities. Energia will be looking to embrace these challenges and look forward to engaging with our customers in new and exciting ways, creating better products around them and connecting them to a more sustainable future.

How are you supporting the energy transition? What are your main milestones for the next years, 2030, 2050?
Energia are fully behind the energy transition and as such have aligned our goals with global and national targets and milestones. We are particularly interested in the areas of distributed energy resources, micro-generation and storage, the role of hydrogen and its integration with wind generation and the transport sector. Looking further ahead we also have a keen interest in Offshore Wind, Data Centres, other applications of Hydrogen, Future Energy Customers & Demand, the Decarbonisation of Transport and Heat and Local Energy Networks.
